Program details:

The program that one participant called "the best", with "lots of great ideas." Here are the details of preparation, recruitment, and training programs that have worked for Northeastern University's Resident Student Association for the past four years. Here is Operation Day One and Beyond.

This program gives the important groundwork needed before a student government or residence hall organization can begin a successful recruitment program. Then it steps through the recruitment and training that will build a successful organization. The detailed notes, and the presentation slides are available to download.

Here's a small exercise that any organization can try. Ask your members to raise their hands for one of the following two categories:

  • People who joined the organization because somebody (a friend, staff member, or a person on the street) asked, begged, cajoled, talked them into it, told them it was fun, needed them to help out, or requested that they volunteer.
  • People who saw a poster and decided to join the organization.

After you ask this question, try to find out why you are spending so much money on posters. This comprehensive recruitment program puts a human face on the organization, and encourages people to join through informational meetings, and targeted recruitment. See the presentation notes to learn more.
